I am passing along this opportunity that teachers might be able to use to have students complete online or to work together as a class to come up with the average in your area.
I am passing along this survey opportunity from the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) with the intention of ensuring that Illinois has good representation in this research. As you may know, AFBF conducts a survey every November to gauge the average cost of a traditional Thanksgiving meal. We find this information useful in our consumer-facing communications by having information on hand that can support
(1) emphasis of the importance of the robust U.S. agriculture industry that keeps food prices affordable (trends highlighted in AFBF’s report will show the price changes of this meal over time as well as account for inflation – these costs have trended down over time);
(2) definitions of the components of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and point back to the commodities grown right here in Illinois that make that possible; and
(3) engagement with conversations about food choice – the survey provides average costs, giving us a baseline to work with when communicating that families should expect affordability whether they seek generic brands, specific name brands, or even prefer certain label attributes, and demonstrate how their preferences may come with a different price tag.
AFBF will calculate the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal for each state with a minimum of 10 surveys submitted.
Those who are interested in participating in this survey are asked to visit any grocery store/chain or food warehouse you prefer (in person) and report the price and size of each listed Thanksgiving meal component as outlined in the survey. Sale prices and store brands will be accepted, however participants should avoid calculating coupons or special deals (buy one, get one free; etc.) in the price. Participants are eligible to win one of four $50 gift cards from AFBF.
The survey is open now through November 17.
