Ag Ed Professional Development: This Old Shop Class with Mike Butler - March 5th

*Sent to All Teachers, College Ag Ed Students & University Ag Ed Faculty

I graduated high school and college without ever taking an ag mechanics class with a lab component. Before I started teaching, I knew I had to do something about that and quickly learned. If you are in this same situation, or maybe you have inherited a wood shop class, then keep reading.......

We would like to invite you to attend "This Old Shop Class" with Mike Butler at Athens High School on Saturday, March 5th from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

To register, teachers should go to, login, visit PD Registration on their Dashboard and sign up for the workshop. Space is limited to 12 teachers for this event. Non-teachers (student teachers) can email me directly if they do not currently have a login for the IL Ag Education website at

A Note from Mike:

I was hired 12 years ago to take over as shop teacher and teach Ag Construction, with nothing more than a basic background in hammers and nails and a semester college course on Ag Mechanics. Over the past 12 years, I have learned many shortcuts/plans/techniques that may help you teach this subject in your classrooms.

We will be building Cornhole Boxes as a project for the workshop while learning to use the following equipment: panel saw, table saw, hole saws, cordless drills, pneumatic nail guns/staplers, wrenches, drup sanders, orbital sanders, belt sanders, drill press, and the band saw.

Topics discussed will be class organization and structure, woodworking, creating and reading projects/plans, shopping/pricing projects, technical drawing/sketching, power tools, shop safety, jig making, and other shortcuts and tips I had to learn the hard way.

If you are uncomfortable in a shop setting with students, this will be a great workshop to get you ready to use unfamiliar equipment and provide you with the skills to teach your students.
