Visiting Assistant Director – Illinois Professional Science Master’s

Graduate College

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has an opening for the Visiting Assistant Director – Illinois Professional Science Master’s (PSM) in the Graduate College. This position supports the mission of the Illinois PSM by recruiting and advising prospective students; cultivating relationships with prospective internship companies and working with students to secure internships.  The Visiting Assistant Director will assist with building the program 's marketing and communication activities and supporting the industry seminar series, including instructional support and teaching.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Recruitment

  • Recruit students through outreach visits at education fairs, professional group networking, company site visits, online and in-person information sessions, course visits, social networking, and telephone/e-mail follow-up of inquiries.
  • Manage communications through an applicant customer relationship management (CRM) system
  • Advise prospective students on admissions, program, and course requirements and on career options
  • Work occasional evening hours, weekend events, and/or out-of-town events.

Student Management & Engagement

  • Support program instruction in professional skills development (e.g., communication, interpersonal skills. influence and negotiation).
  • Provide logistics support for PSM-related events
  • Assist in assessment of students' professional knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Assist with surveys to track student opinions and outcomes
  • Contribute to and maintain content on the program's website and social media.
  • Teach 1-2 evenings per week during the fall and spring academic semesters.

Industry Relations

  • Cultivate partnerships with companies. government agencies, not-for-profits, and other organizations to create internship and employment opportunities for Illinois PSM students and graduates
  • Help develop new internship options that place students in entrepreneurial and/or consulting projects.

Required education, experience, and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to build and develop relationships with hiring managers in business, government and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Aptitude to understand and articulate the value of professional master's degrees to prospective students and to potential employers.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work successfully with diverse groups in a team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated energy and enthusiasm
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access)
  • Experience with Adobe products, including Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop

Preferred education, experience, and qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Two years of relevant experience
  • One-on-one academic and/or career advising experience in higher education or corporate career development experience
  • Undergraduate or graduate teaching experience or corporate training experience
  • Interest in and general knowledge of business and science
  • An understanding of the higher education marketplace
  • Experience using social media
