Livestock, Horticulture – Contest Info

 

Date: Friday, April 8, 2022

 

Livestock:

Location: Bull Test Barn (654 Rowden Road; Carbondale, IL 62901)

 

Parking: There will be no parking at the Bull Test Barn. All vans and buses must park at SIU's service center the address is 2800 Union Road.  The Met/Phys Barn can also be used for parking (where horse judging registration typically is). Vans will be shuttling drivers. Please drop your students off at the bull test center and then park at the service center.

 

Cost: $5/student

 

Registration: 8:30 - 9 am

Contest Start: 9am

Attached is a form that will need to be filled out at registration. You may print the form and bring it filled out or fill it out there.

UPDATE: This year the varsity event and junior varsity event will be held at the same time.

 

Teams will consist of 5 members with the top 3 scores counting towards the team score.

 

Each school is limited to one varsity team and one junior varsity team. You many bring as many practice teams/individuals as you like, and they will be scored as individuals. 

 

This year the livestock contest will consist of 10 rings.

  1. Breeding Gilts
  2. Market Hogs
  3. Breeding Heifers
  4. Market Cows
  5. Breeding Does
  6. Market Goats
  7. Breeding Ewes
  8. Market Lambs
  9. Keep/Cull Swine
  10. Keep/Cull Beef Cattle

 

There will be no reasons classes.

 

Scoring: Scoring of the events will be done by scantron.  We will be using the Judgingcard.com system. Bring clipboards and plenty of pencilsPlease make certain students know their Chapter Number.

Attire: Official Dress is NOT required for this event. Be mindful of the weather and be sure to wear appropriate footwear. Wearing warm layers and close toed shoes is highly encouraged.

 

The contest should conclude around 12:30 pm with the officials’ placings and reasons immediately following the contest. The reasons and placings should conclude around 1:00 pm. Staying for the officials is not required.

 

Horticulture:

 

Location: Agriculture Building (1205 Lincoln Drive; Carbondale, IL 62901)

 

Parking: Vans may park in the Ag Building Parking lot and Buses can park in the parking lot across the street.

 

Cost:$5/student

 

Registration: 8-9am

Contest Start: 9am

  1. Written Exam (50 Questions)
  2. 4 judging classes
    1. Cut Flowers
    2. Foliage Plants
    3. Evergreen
    4. Ground Cover
  3. Plant ID (50 species)
  4. Floriculture Practicum – Plant Disorders
  5. Landscape Practicum – Landscape Drawing

 

The contest will be following the state rules which can be found at https://www.ilaged.org/horticulture
