Here are the common questions and highlights:  

How much will the SOE awards cost and who is paying for it?  There are 6 SOE areas and 2 state plaques are presented to each state winner, we have the potential of purchasing 12 state plaques = $384.00 cost for 12 state-wide plaques.  The Illinois Association FFA will cover the expense of these plaques.  

Supervised Occupational Award Program

Supervised Occupational awards are designed to recognize students who have excelled in the Supervised Occupational Experience program. In order to be recognized the student’s program must be 1) supervised by the instructor, 2) it is challenging to connect to the agriculture industry and therefore fits into an occupational award area 3) there must be career-building skills or career exploration activities involved in the program that connects to the agriculture industry.

Recognition - FFA members with SOEs will compete at the Section, District and State levels, similar to the Proficiency Awards.  Plaques are provided to the state winners by the Illinois FFA.  Any plaques awarded at the Section or District level are the responsibility of the Section or District.  State winners will be recognized on stage during the state FFA convention.  

FFA members competing in SOEs are not eligible to compete in SAE Proficiency Awards.  SOE records do not qualify for the State or American FFA Degrees.

Illinois FFA Board approved a Spanish Creed Speaking LDE for 2023.  See details below.  

2.  Spanish Creed Speaking LDE 

We are very excited to be offering a Spanish Creed Speaking LDE in conjunction with the Public Speaking Finals held during the State FFA Convention. Please click here for the Spanish Creed Speaking LDE Rules.  

• It was properly moved to have a Spanish Creed Speaking LDE competition at the state level with no limit of participants from each chapter.  An FFA member can only enter the State Spanish Creed Speaking LDE or the Section Creed Speaking LDE.  With an intent to sign up due on February 1 and final registration due  May 1. 

Our goal is to post this intent due by February 1, 2023, to get an idea of how many preliminary brackets we will need at the state level.  So, if you have any students who would be interested in the State Spanish Creed Speaking LDE, please click here to complete the intent to participate in the State Spanish Creed Speaking LDE.  In the intent, we are asking if you know of any potential judges who are fluent in Spanish.  

3.   Illinois FFA Alumni and Supporters Letter of Intent Application

The Illinois FFA Alumni and Supporters is accepting applications to be on the Illinois FFA Alumni and Supporters Council.  The council meets 3-4 times per year to judge scholarship applications, plan the alumni annual meeting and auction, plan ways to help FFA members, plus many more items.

If you’d like the fill-in application, please email pdavis@illinoisffa.org.  Once completed, please mail, scan and email, or fax (217-753-3359) to the Illinois FFA Alumni and Supporters, 3221 Northfield Drive, Springfield, IL 62702 by October 1, 2022.

4. Illinois FFA Alumni and Supporters Outstanding Member Application

Do you know an alumni member that has gone out of their way in the past year with your alumni, volunteers, and is a great all-around person, then please complete this application.  Please complete this application by November 11, 2022.  The applications will be judged on November 19, 2022, and the person that nominates this person will be notified and the winner will receive their “surprise” award on February 10, 2023, at the Illinois FFA Alumni and Supporters annual meeting and auction in Springfield, Illinois.  After this event, we will send this application to National FFA Alumni and Supporters for them to judge and your outstanding member could be a national winner in 2024.

6.   Illinois Pork Producers Association State Ambassador Intern

The Illinois Pork Producers Association State Ambassador Intern serves as a representative of the association and the pork industry. The chosen individual will hold the title of State Ambassador for a full year and will work from the Springfield office during the summer of their term (May - August).

Main duties of the intern include managing the birthing center during the 2023 Illinois State Fair (August 10-20), attending Summer Ag Institutes for teachers to present about pork, attend the annual youth leadership summer trip, and various other events throughout the summer. The internship is education and communication focused.

The 2023 intern will be paid a 3-month stipend, totaling $5,500, plus all traveling expenses. Upon completion of the internship, they will also earn a $2,500 scholarship paid directly to the school. Start date will depend on the student's school schedule, and end date will be after the conclusion of the 2023 IL State Fair.

Qualifications:

1. Must be an Illinois resident between the ages of 18 and 23 (Must be age 18 by Jan 1, 2022. Undergraduate and graduate students may apply. Note that payment is only provided via scholarship, directly to the institution.)

2. Must have a strong background in animal husbandry.

3. Must exhibit strong communication, organization and leadership skills

4. Must exhibit a genuine interest in the Illinois pork industry and be able to speak on behalf of it

5. Recommended that he/she has attended Illinois Livestock Leadership Institute (Previously IPLI. Will get to attend on behalf of their internship)

6. Must be a member (or become a member) of the Illinois Pork Producers Association

7. Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel to out-of-state training and functions

8. May only serve one year

7.  Students Can Design 3D Models of Plants

LEARN HOW HERE; A message from Donald Danforth Plant Science Center:  

Dear all, I manage the Education Technology Program at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri (https://www.danforthcenter.org/). This program offers engaging plant and agricultural science experiences using technologies that otherwise rural students may not have due to location, resources, or cost. We have a variety of activities using 3D modeling, augmented and virtual reality, video gaming, and more. We offer professional development, curricula, equipment, and school visits at no cost. We currently have the priority to recruit high school teachers from rural schools to implement a project where students design 3D models of plants under research at the Danforth Center. Teachers are facilitators and do not require training on 3D modeling.  Students receive training through videos and work in collaborative teams to research the biology and use of the species of choice, create the models, and disseminate their results through presentations and one-page documents. Teachers and students are supported by scientists and 3D modelers to conduct the project. During school visits we bring augmented and virtual reality equipment to introduce the students to the application of 3D models and plant science using these technologies. See the attached guide that describes the project in detail.

We will appreciate it very much if you share these opportunities with teachers from rural schools that are located within a ~200 miles radius of the St. Louis area.
